Cash Rebate Credit Cards

The Cash Rebate Credit Cards section is organized as follows. We first hightlight the different types of cash rebate credit cards, then followed by highlighting the cash back credit cards that have been chosen to our Editor's Choice List. We then provide a directory list of cash back credit cards.

Types of Cash Rebate Credit Cards

We could categories cash rebate credit cards into the four following groups.

1% cash rebate credit cards - This is a typical standard cash back credit card that pays 1% rebate on purchases. The rebate formula is simple and 1% rebate payout is the standard for most reward credit cards.

"Everyday purchase" cash rebate card - American Express uses this phrase to describe purchases from standalone supermarkets, gasoline stations and drugstores. Many cash rebate credit cards pay a higher rebate for purchase of these items (as high as 5%), and 1% for "other purchases". The Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Card falls into this category

Tiered Cash Rebate Credit Card - Tiered rebate credit cards typically pay higher than a 1% rebate payout. However, the rebate percentage depends on your level of annual expenditure and/or also whether you carry a balance. The Blue Cash® is an example of a tiered rebate credit card.

Discover Cards - Discover cards have added a new twist to the cash rebate credit card category. Most of their cards have a tiered cash rebate formula that increases as annual expenditute increases. However, Discover allows you to redeem your cash rebates for DOUBLE the value in gift certificates from their merhant partners. (once you do that, it technically stops being a "cash" rebate card, though your rebate percentage doubles, and it becomes a shopping reward card). The Discover® Platinum Card discover platinum card is a typical example.

Editor's Choice - our pick of the best cash rebate credit cards

Combining an "everyday purchase cash rebate credit card" with a "tiered rebate card" actually allows you to earn more rebates because you can get more than 1% rebate from purchases at standalone supermarkets, gas stations and drugstores from a 'everyday purchase" cash rebate credit card, while you can earn more than 1% rebate with a tiered rebate card on "other purchases". the following two cash rebate credit cards qualify for our Editor's Choice List of the best credit cards as they represent the best of the "everyday purchase" and "tiered rebate cards".

citi dividend card
The Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Card cash rebate credit cards allows you to earn 5% cash rebate for purchases at standalone supemarkets, drugstores and gas stations and 1% rebate on other purchases. It has a simple rebate formula that does not depend on annual expenditure or whether you carry a balance. There is no annual fee and the apr is quite low. You also get a 0% apr offer on balance transfer for 12 months from the date of balance transfer (not account opening) and makes for a very good card to transfer your balance. You can earn up to $300 in annual cash rebate, which some might find too low. But you can also always get the another Citi Dividend card.

chase cash plus rewards
The Chase Cash Plus Rewards Card has essentially identical cash rebate formula to the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card. You earn 5% cash rebates on purchases at grocers, gas stations and drugstores and 1% on everything else. Like the Citi Dividend card, you can earn up to $300 in annual rebates. You also get a 0% introductory apr for 12 months. The part where it stands out from the Citi Dividend Card is that you can exchange your cash rebates for gift certificates and rewards if you want to. Those looking to transfer a balance or carry a balance should opt for the Citi Dividend as they use the average daily balance method to calculate monthl y balances (unlike Chase which uses the 2-cycle method) and charge no fee for the balance transfer.

american express blue cash
Tiered rebate credit cards have one feature that simple rebate formula credit cards do not have : they pay more than 1% on "other purchases" after your spending pass a certain threshold. The Blue Cash® is a very good tiered rebate card. For annual spending up to $6,500, you earn 1% rebates on "everyday purchases" and 0.5% rebates on "other purchases". Spend above $6,500 and you will earn 5% rebates on "everyday purchases" and 1.5% rebates on "other purchases". You can earn rebates for up to $60,000 in annual spending. This is a very good cash rebate card and even better when combined with the Citi® Dividend Platinum Select Card.
