Reward Program Credit Cards

The Reward Program Credit Cards section is organized as follows. We first highlight the various types of reward program credit cards. This is then followed by our recommended reward credit cards. We end with a directory listing of reward credit cards.

Types of Reward Program Credit Cards

All-round reward progam credit cards - these are reward program credit cards whose reward program has both travel and shopping rewards. Very often, they have cash rebate rewards and even options for you to donate a charity. Most of these cards are issued by Citibank and American Express. Citibank's reward program is based on the ThankYou Redemptions Network Reward Program and American Express has the reknowned Membership Rewards.

Travel Reward Credit Cards - These credit cards have reward programs that has only travel rewards. The rewards come in the form of airline tickets, hotel certificates, car rental certificates and even cruises. The Chase Value Miles(SM) Platinum Visa® Card and The Miles Card from Discover® Card are examples of such cards.

Hybrid Cash Back Reward Credit Card - Hybrid cash back and reward credit cards allow you to convert the points you earn to either cash or rewards. The HSBC Mastercard with Cash or fly rewards is a typical example. You can exchange your points for either cash rebates or an airline ticket. This feature is important because if you fly off season and you can a cheap ticket price, you may be better off using your points for cash rebates and paying for the airline ticket rather than converting your points to one free airline ticket. Discover Platinum Cards are also hybrid cash back reward credit card, but their rewards are mostly in the form of shopping gift certificates.

"City" reward credit cards - This is a termed I came up with myself because of the latest reward credit cards from American Express. To target the hip and younger market, American Express first launched the IN:NYC® from American Express in nyc card. The card was based on a new reward program called the INSIDE Reward Program which has partners with restaurants, bars and theatres in New York City. The card also allowed cardholders to earn double reward points for spending on "city essentials" like wireless phone service, restaurants, gym memberships etc. Like the Membership Rewards, INSIDE reward points do not expire and you can earn unlimited points. American Express has since followed up with the IN:Chicago and IN:LA Card.

Editor's Choice List - Best Reward Program Credit Cards

citi diamond preferred rewards card
The Citi® Diamond Preferred Rewards® Card is probably the best travel reward credit card if you all you wish is to redeem points for a free airline ticket. The reason is because you earn 5 points for every dollar you spend at standalone supermarkets, gas stations and drugstores.

Most credit card reward program requires 25,000 points for a free roundtrip, economy, restricted ticket within the Continental US. A regular credit card that allows you to earn one point for every dollar you spend requires you to spend $25,000 to accumulate 25,000 points. If you spend $500 a month (not an unreasonable assumption) on groceries and gas, you can earn 30,000 points a year with the Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards Card (on $6,000 of annual spending on groceries and gasoline). $6,000 of spending can get you a free airline ticket. Even some credit cards like the Chase Value Miles only requires 24,000 miles for a free ticket, the fact that you can earn 5 points for every dollar you spend on "everyday purchases" makes all the difference. Even if you wish to use your points for other things, this card earns you faster points than all other cards.

citi premierpass card
The Citi® Premierpass Card is the most unique travel reward credit card in the market. You not only earn points when you use your credit card, but you also earn points on the miles you fly (at a rate of 1 miles for every 3 miles). Hence, if you are a frequent flyer, you can chalk up points very quickly. These points you earn are on top of the frequent flyer points you will get. If you pay for your companion's airline ticket, you will also earn points on the miles they fly. There is also no annual fee for the Citi Premierpass Card. The elite version allows you to earn double points for purchases at standalone supermarkets, gas stations and drugstores and one point for every mile flown. But you have to pay an annual fee of $75.00. The Citi® Premierpass Card has no peers in terms of ability to earn points through airline travel.

bluesky
One of the drawbacks of a reward credit card with its own reward program is that they impose some restrictions when you use points to book your travel rewards. For example, some have blackout dates on airlines. Most require you to book your tickets 21 days in advance and some require a Saturday night stay!. You also cannot book flights with stopovers. If you are a last minute traveller or simply do not like these restrictions, then you will like the Blue Sky® Credit Card. With this card, you can use any travel agent (even internet agents) to book your travel arrangements and get the best deal. You then use your points to get a credit on your next statement at a rate of 7,500 points for $100 (ie more than 1%).

Those who are members of one or more frequent flier program and do not want to pay the high annual fees normally associated with airline credit cards, or looking for a shopping reward credit card should consider the Blue from American Express® . This card will suit those who either like to redeem points for hotel stays, who have a few frequent flyer programs and would like to transfer them as and when they want, or to those who like to use their reward points for shopping merchandise. Here is a list of the type and number of rewards in each category
